On June 17, 2023, Barbara Ann Garriott was surrounded by her small family, along with Brother Chris, as she made her way to heaven, where we know God was waiting for her, as well as her beloved Freddie. Family and those who knew her are completely grief-stricken but have peace in knowing she is with the love of her life and can breathe easily.
Barbara was born on July 3, 1943, in Ghent, Kentucky. She grew up on the farm with her parents (Webb and Christine Mefford), along with her siblings (Nellie Mae and Jerry Lee Mefford).
Growing up on a farm, Barbara learned how to work hard at an early age. In addition to her responsibilities on the farm, she was also able to relish the talent of becoming a well-known majorette at Carroll County High School. During this time, she met her future husband, Wilbert Frederick Garriott (Freddie). They married on Barbara’s birthday, July 3, 1961. Freddie always joked that he saved Barbara from her hard work on the farm.
Soon after they were married, their first daughter Robin was born. A year and two days later, they welcomed Rhonda into their now complete family of four. Years later, Bobby Smith became an intricate part of the family in 1988.
Barbara and Freddie worked as a team to teach their children to respect others and to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. “The Garriott Girls,”, as they were often called, cherished their childhood memories and the examples set by their parents.
Barbara and Freddie always thought their girls hung the moon. However, when their two grandchildren (Macy Elise, Eric Walters, and Mason Parker) entered their story, a whole new type of love entered their hearts.
Devastatingly, in 2005, Barbara lost her son, Freddie. Despite her overwhelming grief, she continued to be the glue that held her family together.
Legacy is not leaving something for people. It’s leaving something in people. Barbara's legacy of giving selflessly and loving unconditionally will live on through those who have crossed her path.
