Don Nevils Cheatum, 77, of Turners Station, Kentucky, passed away on December 10, 2023, in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was born on May 22, 1946, in Ghent, Carroll County, Kentucky.
Don's career was centered around his service at Kentucky Utilities Ghent Generating. After dedicating 35 years of his life to the company, he retired as a shift supervisor.
Educated at Carrollton High School, graduating in the class of 1964, Don received a solid foundation for his future endeavors. He valued education and carried the lessons he learned throughout his life.
Don also served his country as a proud member of the United States Army. His military service exemplified his patriotism and dedication to his nation.
Outside of work and service to his country, Don enjoyed various hobbies and interests. He was known for his proficiency in electrical and construction jobs around his home. Additionally, he found joy in golfing, hunting, and fishing. These pastimes provided him with relaxation and fulfillment.
Don's list of accomplishments is extensive and reflects his involvement in various aspects of community life. Notably, he was honored as a Kentucky Colonel—a title bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities. Throughout his life, Don broke barriers as one of the first African-American basketball players for Carroll County High School. Moreover, he played an essential role as one of the first African-American School Board Members in Carroll County. His passion for community development extended to serving on the Carrollton Planning and Zoning Board.
In this difficult time of loss, Don is survived by many beloved family members and friends who cherished him deeply. He leaves behind his loving wife Marsha Jones Cheatum from Turners Station, KY; two sons: Donnie (D'Anne) Cheatum from Erlanger, KY, and Dustin (Jocelyn Messina-Thedford) Cheatum from Worthville, Kentucky; a daughter, Lela Cheatum Rankins, residing in Covington, Kentucky; a stepson, Richie Legg from Westport, Kentucky; a stepdaughter, Brandi Legg from La Grange, Kentucky. Furthermore, two brothers, Steve Cheatum from Texarkana, Texas, and Sammy Cheatum from California stood by his side through thick and thin. Don's sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren brought immense joy to his life.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home with the Pastor Ronald Evans and Bishop Carl Behanan officiating the service. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Ghent 2nd Baptist Cemetery.
Don Nevils Cheatum will be remembered as a dedicated professional who left an enduring legacy in both the corporate world and the community he called home. His warm presence and remarkable achievements will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
