Fothergill Fothergill

Elwyn Barnette "Barney" Fothergill, 87, of Gray, GA., formerly of Carroll County, KY., died on Monday, August 20, 2007 in Georgia.

Mr. Fothergill was born on September 16, 1919 in Carroll Co, KY., the son of the late Charles and Florence Fothergill. He entered the U.S. Army in July of 1941 and served in the Pacific theater during W.W. II., taking part in battles in Luzon, East Indies, Papaun, New Guinea and Bismark Archipelago and was a recipient of the Bronze Star for his service.

Mr. Fothergill was discharged in September of 1945. He owned and managed Fothergill's Gulf in Louisville, KY., and retired in 1982 from the Naval Ordinance Station in Louisville, KY.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Alene Ray Fothergill; son and daughter-in-law, Steven Ray and Christina Fothergill of Gaum; daughter; Debbie Lurie-Smith of Gray; grandsons, Steven Smith and Josh Lurie, both of Gray, Randy Fothergill of Louisville, KY., and Tony Fothergill of Sultan, WA., a granddaughter, Mindy Fothergill of Gaum; and a granddaughter-in-law, Kristi Smith of Gray.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son; Randall Barnette Fothergill and his brother, Charles W. Fothergill.

Memorial graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Carrollton, KY., with the Rev. Hardin Lowe officiating. The Carrollton American Legion Post #41 will present Military Honors at the Graveside.

Cremation was chosen by the family.

The Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home has been entrusted with the local arrangements.
