Fred William “Bill” Mertz, 85, of Carrollton, KY, died on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at the Hosparus Inpatient Care Center in Louisville, KY.
He was born on October 15, 1937, in Henry County, KY, the son of the late Fred and Katherine Maudie Frazier Mertz. Bill as many people remember him had retired from the former Rich Ladder Factory in Carrollton as an assembler. He also became known as the “Lawnmower Man”, one of his passions was mowing and working on and selling lawn mowers from his home in Carrollton. Many of his yard sales that he had, he would take his proceeds earned and make a generous donation to Gideons International. In his earlier years he enjoyed racing his dirt track car on the dirt track racecourses and he always enjoyed attending racing events recently over the years. He enjoyed fishing and playing a good game of Pool of which, he was very good at it. Bill was a member of the Calvary Full Gospel Church in Prestonville, KY.
He will be missed by his wife, Irene Eversole Mertz of Carrollton, KY, four sons, Freddy (Donna) Mertz of New Castle, KY, Joe Mertz of Sulphur, KY, Billy (Robin) Mertz of Worthville, KY, and Delbert Mertz of Carrollton, KY, three daughters, Betty West of Eminence, KY, Kathy (Tim) Combs of Goshen, KY, and Mary (Ricky) Woods of Turners Station, KY, a step-son, Leroy Palmer of Carrollton, KY, a step-daughter, June McAllister of Carrollton, KY, a brother, James Mertz of Frankfort, KY, eighteen grandchildren and thirty eight great grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Linda Phillips, two brothers, Charles and Frank Mertz and a sister, Sarah Raubourn.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home.
