Jim served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis in the early 1960's, and eventually settled in Carrollton, KY where he worked for Elf Atochemin several positions for 35 years, retiring in 1998.

Jim met and married the former Louise Stockdale in 1978. Jim was always happiest when he and Louise were together, and the love and respect they showed for each other over the years was a constant source of inspiration to everyone that knew them. Jim is survived by his beloved wife and companion; as well as his sister Betty Gail Lasley(Ron) of Louisville, KY; children, Stephen Scott Fitzpatrick of Louisville, KY, Mark Allen Fitzpatrick of Madison, IN and Jennifer Lynn Fretland (Adrian) of Lincoln, MA; his stepchildren Michael L. He was a proud member of the Carrollton Christian Church and the community of Carrollton, where he and Louise made innumerable friends over the years. Jim never made enemies, and all who knew him will remember a warm, caring, generous soul. Jim was a big fan of horse racing and spent many hours at the track with friends and family, and he loved to talk about sports and horse racing with anyone that would care to give him the opportunity.
