Kathryn Chapman

April 1, 1923 — July 16, 2008

Kathryn "Kate" Chapman died Wednesday, July 16th at Carroll County Memorial Hospital. She was born April 1, 1923 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, the daughter of Edward and Kathryn Gray Ball. She was a graduate of Nazareth Academy near Bardstown, where she was known as an artist, horsewoman, and athlete. Kate came to Carrollton following her marriage to Gex O. Williams in 1947.

Kate was an active community leader who volunteered her time with many organizations, especially the Carroll County Memorial Hospital, and the American Cancer Society. She helped organize and worked for many years with the Carroll County Association for the Mentally Retarded, later the HOPE workshop She was a deeply committed member of the Carrollton United Methodist Church for 61 years, where she served in many roles including trustee, fellowship chairman, and organizer of the community "Tasting Bee". She was honored by the community in 1992 as "Volunteer of the Year" and in 1977 as Ambassador of the city of Carrollton.

She married Doug Chapman in 1973. Along with her son, Ed Gex Williams, they founded their business, Chapman Tire Center, in 1976. Kate and Doug continued to serve together as community leaders, and were chosen by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce in 1978 as "Citizens of the Year."

A talented golfer, she was Women's Club Champion at both Owl Creek Country Club in Anchorage and later at Madison Country Club. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the United Methodist Women, and the Carroll County Hospital Auxiliary.

Kate was a devoted mother and grandmother. She especially loved making Christmas a special time for her family, and summer beach vacations with her grandchildren.

She is survived by daughters Kathy Franklin and husband Larry, of Carrollton ; Lynn Livesay and husband Gary, of Surfside Beach, South Carolina; son Ed Gex Williams and wife Carolyn, of Carrollton; and stepdaughter Peggy Chapman and husband Dwayne Foley of Fayetteville, North Carolina. She is also survived by grandchildren Gex Williams and Lyndsay Andrews of Carrollton; Evan Livesay, Lydia Livesay, Beth Nichols, Jenny Portu, Thomas Hadley, and Kaleb Foley; and seven great-grandchildren. She leaves a sister, Mary Lucy Rice and a dear niece, Ellen Parks, of Lexington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doug Chapman, who died April 6, 2008; her first husband, Gex O. Williams, in 1969; and granddaughter Rebecca Hadley in 1982.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 19th at the Carrollton United Methodist Church at 1 PM; visitation will begin at 11 AM prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Carrollton United Methodist Church.

The Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
