L.D. "Doug" Chapman, 83, of Carrollton, KY., died on Sunday, April 6, 2008 at his residence in Carrollton, KY.
He was born on May 17, 1924 in Campbellsburg, Henry County, KY., the son of the late Wilbert and Lillian (Roberts) Chapman.
A native of Campbellsburg, he was an active businessman and civic leader in the Carroll County area since 1946. He was a graduate of Campbellsburg High School; he attended the University of Kentucky and remained an avid Wildcat fan all his life. As a young man, he was known as "Red Chapman"; a talented third baseman, he was scouted and offered a contract by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He chose instead to serve his country, enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in both World War II and the Korean War; he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.
After being honorably discharged in 1951, he returned to the Carroll County Area; he was a distributor for Standard Oil of Kentucky, and the Chevron Corporation. He was a director of the Farmer's Bank of Milton and served as bank president from 1979 to 1991. He established Chapman Tire Center in 1976 and remained active in the business until his death.
Doug was an active member of the Carrollton United Methodist Church. He was also a member and past president of the Milton Lion's Club; member and past president of the Carrollton Rotary Club; a 32nd Degree Mason; Member of the American Legion, the Oleika Temple Shrine; and member and past president of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. He was a volunteer for the Carroll County Association for the Mentally Retarded, The American Cancer Society, and the Northern Kentucky Mental Health Board. He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce in 1978, when he and his wife Kate were named "Citizens of the Year': chamber president James Bogo noted that they were chosen for their "countless hours of volunteer service rendered to their community, and their love and concern for our people."
He will be missed by his wife; Kate Chapman, a daughter; Peggy Foley of Fort Bragg, N.C., a Step Son; Ed Gex Williams of Carrollton, KY., two step daughters; Lynn Livesay of Surfside Beach, S.C., and Kathy Franklin of Carrollton, KY., a sister; Roberta Willhite of Campbellsburg, KY., seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister; Betty Chapman and one granddaughter; Rebecca Hadley.
Funeral Services were on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at the Carrollton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Shannon Boaz officiating the service.
Military Honors were conducted by the Carrollton American Legion Post #41 at the Graveside.
In Lieu of Flowers, Memorial Gifts may be given to the Carrollton United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers were Larry Franklin, Mike Andrews, Gex Williams, Gary Livesay, Neil Bryan and Malcolm Carraco. Honorary Pallbearers will be Reggie Rand, Jim Shepherd, Jim Klingler, Cecil Dorten and Duper Craig.
The Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
