Marshall Watkins

March 5, 1926 — October 29, 2012

Marshall Ray Watkins, 86, passed away Monday, October 29 at his home surrounded by his family after a long illness. He is preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Crafton Watkins Tilley, his step father Harley Tilley, and his father, Marshall Ray Watkins who died before his birth.

He graduated from Carroll County High School in 1944, then enlisted in the Army Air Force at age 17. He served in World War II as a radio operator aboard a B-29 Bomber. After the war, he returned to Carrollton and married Frances Ann McManis, his wife of 65 years. He worked as a contractor building many houses in this area over the years. He also taught carpentry at the Vocational School in the 1980's. He was a life long member of the Carrollton Christian Church, and served as an elder and deacon.

Ray will be greatly missed by friends and family. He had a sharp sense of humor, and was always quick with a joke and a smile. He was a member of the Butler Generals Square Dance Club. Also, he greatly enjoyed playing checkers with whoever was willing to take him up on the challenge, and didn't mind losing. He is survived by his son Gary Ray Watkins, wife Dottie Watkins, and granddaughter Stacey Heather Watkins.
