Matthew Felix Gandolfo, 87, of Florence, KY, formerly of Carrollton, KY, affectionately known as Matt, passed away on December 22, 2023, at Villa Springs of Erlanger in Erlanger, Kenton County, Kentucky. He was born on March 12, 1936, in Richmond, Madison County, KY, and moved to Carrollton in 1963.
Matt dedicated his professional career to the field of education. After obtaining a master's degree in education, he joined the Carroll County School system for over 33 years, teaching science at Cartmell Elementary School then transitioning to the Carroll County High School also teaching science and retired from the Carroll County High School where he served as the Director of Pupil Personnel. His contributions to the school and its students were invaluable. Matt's passion for education and his commitment to the well-being of students inspired those around him, which influenced him to volunteer for the K.E.T. and also had served as Director of K.E.T., upon which he was given the Employee of the Year award.
He served his country in the United States Army, during the Vietnam Era.
Outside of work and military service, Matt had a variety of interests and hobbies. He found great joy in coaching football and basketball at various levels and schools throughout his life. The impact he had on young athletes was immeasurable. Matt's guidance and mentorship helped positively shape many young lives.
He had served as President of the local Jaycees and Kiwanis along with the Teacher's Association.
In his leisure time, Matt embraced fishing as a favorite pastime. Sitting by the water with a fishing rod in hand provided him with peace and tranquility. Additionally, he shared a love for horse racing and enthusiastically followed and cheered for equine athletes throughout his life.
Matt will be lovingly remembered by his surviving family members and friends. He is survived by his wife Gerri Gandolfo of Florence, KY; two sons, Guy (Peggy) Thomas of Richmond, KY, and Matthew Michael Gandolfo of Bedford, KY; a daughter, Maria K. (Matthew) Crabtree of Hickson, TN; a sister Rose Jane Mansfield of Richmond, KY; four grandchildren, Katie, Keaton, Landrie and Dana; and one great-grandchild, Scarlet.
He is preceded in death by his parents Tom and Maria Marino Gandolfo and two sisters Carmela Garmon and Katherine Rickabaugh.
Matt's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. His passion for education, commitment to students, and love for coaching will forever be remembered. A dedicated family man, Matt leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
A Memorial Mass honoring Matt's life will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home.
