Paul Norton Fishback, Sr., age 94, a beloved member of the Carrollton community, passed away on May 31, 2024, in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. He was born in La Grange, Oldham County, Kentucky on November 28, 1929. Paul led a remarkable life filled with dedication to his family, country, and community.
After graduating from Cross Plains Indiana High School, Paul went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army during the 1950s in Germany as part of the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he retired as a firefighter in the mid 1980's from the former Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison, IN. Not only was he a firefighter, but Paul also dedicated his days to farming on the family farm in Carrollton.
One of Paul's proudest accomplishments was co-founding the West Side Volunteer Fire Department in 1970 alongside his wife Charlsey Walker Fishback. He later served as Fire Chief for several years, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his community.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Paul found joy in attending tractor pulls - a hobby that brought him great happiness over the years.
Paul's legacy lives on through his surviving family and friends. He is survived by three daughters: Beverly "Bev" Hughes of Carrollton, KY; Valorie Spencer of Louisville, KY; and Lisa (David) McRoy of Louisville, KY. Additionally, he is survived by a sister, Jodie (Mike) Kemper of Carrollton, KY; a grandson Joe Paul Hughes of Louisville, KY; several nieces and nephews; as well as great nieces and nephews who will always cherish his memory.
Paul is preceded in death by his father Jesse Dudley Fishback (1979), mother Reva Frances Mann Fishback (2015), wife Charlsey Walker Fishback (2011), son Paul Norton Fishback Jr. (2023), sister Shirley Jean Roberts (2020), sons-in-law Terry Hughes (2021) and Jim Spencer (2024), as well as brother-in-law Charles Roberts (2023).
The visitation and funeral services will be held at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home in Carrollton on Wednesday, June 5th. The visitation will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM with the funeral service following at 1:00 PM to honor the remarkable life of Paul Norton Fishback Sr. Burial will take place in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Carrollton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Carroll County Animal Shelter or the Carroll County Food Pantry in care of the funeral home.
Paul will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace knowing he touched many lives with his kindness and unwavering dedication to those around him.
