Ret. SFC Herman Leslie Smith, Jr., age 66, died Friday, Janaury 27, 2017 at Norton's Hospital in Louisville, KY. He was born in Shelbyville, Shelby County, KY on February 10, 1950 to Herman B. and Lena Catherine Justice Smith (Chilton). He retired from the U.S. Army in August 1991 and was a member of the American Legion Post #9 in Madison, In and the Honor Guard for Post #9 and served as chaplain when needed.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hinds Smith, whom he married June 20, 2015. Also surviving; a son, Brian G. Smith of Carrollton, KY, a step-son, William Gus McQueary of Milton, KY, five sisters, Patricia Beggs of Carrollton, KY, Joanie Smith of Bedford, KY, Linda Moore of Carrollton, KY, Janet Louden of Worthville, KY and Rita Werner of Carrollton, KY, two brothers, Ikie Miller of Hanover, In and Timmy Chilton of Wheatley, KY and one grandchild, William D. McQueary. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harry Smith.
The Rev. Mike McCarter officiated the services. Military honors were performed by members of the American Legion Post #9 Honor Guard.
