Robert E. "Jack" Bates, Sr., 79, of Carrollton, KY., died Friday afternoon at the Carroll County Hospital in Carrollton.
He was born in Henry Co., KY., the son of the late Eugene and Rinda Bell Bates. "Jack" as he was known was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard serving twenty six years with them during W.W. II., the Korean Conflict and the early stages of the Vietnam War. He was also a Carpenter for the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers working on local Locks and Dams. Memberships include the American Legion Post #41 and the Carrollton Moose Lodge.
Survivors include two daugthers; Betty Mills of Louisville, KY., and Ruth Bates of Atlanta, GA., four sons; Bob Bates of Madison, IN., Eugene Bates of Carrollton, KY., Mark Bates of Sanders, KY., and Charlie Bates of Hanover, IN., several grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Esther Bates, brothers; Raymond E. Bates, Sr., William Bates, Vernon Bates, Franklin Bates and Leon "Chigger" Bates.
The Rev. Pat Butcher will officiate the service on Monday at the funeral home.
