Velma Catherine Taylor

Velma Catherine "Shorty" Taylor, 89, of Carrollton, KY., went to be with the LORD on February 13, 2009 at the Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carrollton, Carroll County, KY.

She was born on March 8, 1919 to Tony and Virgie (Henry) Westrick in Trimble County, KY. She married Joseph Butler Taylor on January 15, 1937. Velma accepted Christ as her Savior and was a member of the Gospel Baptist Church in Carrollton, KY. One thing Velma made sure of was that her children were always in church while growing up.

She was a hard worker all her life, besides raising her family and taking care of her home, she worked out on the farm and worked the tobacco houses in the winter. She was a former employee of the former Charlestown Powder Plant in Charlestown, IN., the former Jefferson Proving Ground near Madison, IN., the former Meese Sewing Factory in Madison, IN., the former Joyce Shoe Factory in Madison, IN., the former Gypsy Grill and Greyhound Bus Stop in Carrollron, KY., and the former Prestonville Truck stop.

Together they had five children; Shelby Jean Richmond and Kathy Butters of Milton, KY., Beryl Young of Bedford, KY., Joseph Donald Taylor of Carrollton, KY., and Brenda Smith of Ghent, KY., a sister; Donnetta Alexander of Louisville, KY., a brother; S.G. Westrick of Milton, KY., thirteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren, thirteen great great grandchildren, one step great grandchild,

three step great grandchildren and five step great great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Joseph Butler Taylor on December 16, 1996, five brothers; Logan, Hubert and Virgil Westrick along with two infant brothers, three sisters; Nadine Barnes, Helen Robertson and Novella Westrick and one great grandchild; Shari Smith.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday,February 17, 2009 at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Cammack and the Rev. Larry Workman officiating the service. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M., Monday, February 16, 2009 at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dwayne Smith, Travis Butters, Jerry and Bobby Maines, Michael and Heath Hewitt and Dusty Baker.

Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Carrollton, KY.

In Lieu of Flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Hospice of the Bluegrass.
